  1. Confessions
♥ I love Tuesday nights, because Time Team is on. I secretly thought I wanted to go into archaeology at one point in my life and even took a couple of medieval archaeology classes during my brief college career. Then I woke up and realized I would have to know dates and timelines and be able to distinguish different rocks and all that. Not to mention the dirt…. under the nails… oh eww. So yeah, it didn’t really take. But I love my Tuesday night ritual. I get home, get settled, make my dinner (since Hans is usually at rehearsal), and get to the couch by 6:00 to snuggle in for approximately 50 minutes of history. LOVE IT!

Last week’s episode took place in Bridgnorth. Now I want to go there.

♥ Speaking of places I want to go, I have never really thought about going to Greece. At least, I should say, I have a few other places that rank higher on my list of places to get to before I die. That was until I found out about Ikies Traditional Houses. Now I’m obsessed with getting to these Greek Isles and maybe even moving there forever. Gorgeous!

If When we go to the Netherlands in 2010 for SAIL (which I’ve mentioned a time or two or three), I’m thinking we may need to stop off in Oia!

♥ Oh, and back to speaking of archaeology, Summer 2008 cannot get here fast enough. Lego Indiana Jones: The Videogame. YES!

I hate Lily Allen. There I said it. I always have. (Not just because I’m forced to listen to it at the office.) That whiney “Smile” song makes me want to die. And when I saw the little swear bear being interviewed on some video program, her attitude was just very unattractive. If this were Empire Records, I’d be exercising my veto right now.

  2. Riva Viva
Go here and watch the new Riva ad. This is to shopping carts what Ok Go is to treadmills.

Hmm… Three-day weekend for us, mostly. The house is so clean I want to roll around on the floor. (Except I have a sneaking suspicion that Chucky has fleas we need to get rid of, so that is the only thing from going through with that prior floor-rolling idea.)

    1. Why haven’t I seen everyone everywhere talking about Psych?
    2. Does everyone not know about it’s pure unadulterated awesomeness?
    3. How can anyone between 28-35 not DIE watching this?

  4. In Brief

    • I stupidly wore my wedding rings (with no gloves) while scrubbing a stain with bleach today… still afraid to look close enough to see if I messed them up.
    • Having a Mexican dinner this weekend. Listening to lots of Buena Vista Social Club to get in the mood.
    • Seeing as I’m a Harry Potter widow this week, I’m starting my own spoiler rumor: “Ron kills Hermione… accidentally!!”

  5. Here Kitty Kitty
Yesterday, my brother-in-law got us all on this ship:

Then we climbed up six stories to the area by that lamp at the end of the t-bar up there:

So we could look across the river and see this:

It was actually really windy up there:

And even though we were still across the river, we could see the USS Kitty Hawk pretty good through the binoculars:

Though probably the best/weirdest part of the ship tour was seeing this poster:

  6. Expatriatism
Another American expat in Brisbane. Whee! (via The Briddles)

And speaking of Americans in Brisbane… there are about 5500 of them here right now. My brother-in-law does something or other down at the port, and I’m trying to get him to get me close enough to see the Kitty Hawk this weekend. Otherwise the photo gallery will have to suffice.

  7. Live Earth Worked!
Brisbane is experiencing record low temps. Awesome. Sort of. I’m freezing but am hesitant to complain… the hellish hot heat gets far too much time during the year!

In other tree-hugging news, we’ve come up with a new energy-saving solution. We’re not using incandescent. We’re not even using halogen. We’ve apparently decided not to replace bulbs at all when they burn out. (Neither of us have attempted the multiple chair-stacking routine required to change the smoke-detector battery.) Now at night, we use the ambient lighting of the computer screen. (I know… I know…)

  8. Mello Kitty
    Chucky is sick. 🙁 🙁 🙁

Sick to the point where we took him to the vet this morning. I had a rough time… though I hate to admit it. This was my first “taking my child to the doctor” moment, and I was so worried. There may have been a tear or two.

It all started Saturday when Hans said he thought that Chucky was weeing in the bathtub. The germophobe in me was all ready to do some serious bleaching, and we couldn’t decide whether we should encourage that behaviour or not. On one hand, at least we don’t have to worry when he outsmarts us and stays inside all day. On the other hand, eww!

But on Sunday, he went in the tub again… and then again not a half an hour later. Only there appeared to be just drips, nothing significant. (I can’t believe I’m talking about cat pee.)

Being the googlemeister that I am, I did some searching and found that cats can get urinary tract infections… and even worse, some people were talking about the urgency of veterinary care to avoid DEATH. Now I know with my single, solitary UTI experience, I thought I was going to die… but if this can kill my kitty, then we need to be doing something.

By this morning, he would come inside the house for five minutes and then go back out to go to the bathroom, so I insisted that we make work of this vet visit as soon as possible.

Of course, that meant getting him TO the vet. A whole other story in itself. (No blood from any party though, so we felt pretty proud of ourselves.) The doc had a quick look and said it looked like the early stages and to keep an eye on him to make sure something actually was coming out, otherwise it means his little tubes are blocked with crystals of some sort. Whatever.

So we have to give him tablets twice a day… Hans’s job. I’m not sure if he’ll ever forgive me for tricking him into the box with my sheep liver kitty treats, but I’m glad he’s on the mend.

Since I’m now the Weird Cat Lady, I can just as well post this picture. We spent another $7 a week or so ago just to further prove that Chucky doesn’t play with toys… be it a cute little grub stuffed with catnip or an awesome octopus-like ball of fur.

Its name was originally going to be called Doc Oc, until the he’s-not-going-to-play-with-it realization. That’s when I decided that I was going to get my money’s worth out of it by making Chucky wear it from now on. The toy is now referred to as Perry… that’s short for Perry the Parasite with the Carrier Named Chucky. I think he likes it.

(I can’t remember what else I was going to say, so this is an all-cat post.)

P.S. If I have my way those nasty burgundy walls will be a thing of the past SOON!

    removalist (ree myu vol ist)
    n. a company or individual hired to move ones belongings to another location; movers
“The removalists are coming on Saturday for the rest of the furniture and large boxes.”

Oh and “curb” is spelled “kerb” here. I thought they were kidding.

I Have Some Stalking to Do
I’m about an hour away from Ethan Hawke. Don’t tell me you didn’t fall in love with him in Reality Bites. Though, now that I think about it, I’d be hard-pressed to recall anything he’s done since.

  10. And…. CUT!
I had to direct pedestrian traffic on a shoot today, and Tash is the only one who may see the ad. So I spent part of the afternoon getting bitten by mosquitoes outside the Queensland Club (WikiMapia) I was going to act like I had a Jack-Bauer-issued ear piece, but then the cameraman gave me a walkie-talkie, so I didn’t have to… and considering we took up all of 15 feet of sidewalk, at the MOST, we really could have just yelled to each other. Oh well. It’s surprising what you can get people to do when you’re holding a walkie-talkie and wearing a high-visibility vest.

    Potter-mania
We’re going to see Harry Potter in Gold Class on Sunday. Too bad Threadless had sold out of the Spoilt t-shirt before we ordered last. Hans said he wouldn’t have had the heart to wear it anyway, for those who haven’t read the next couple books.

    P.S.
We’re both feeling better, thanks! But Hans has some white spots on the back of his throat… *meeer-mow* …so hopefully that clears up before Thursday.

  11. The Pain in My Elbow is Worth It
Pardon me, I’m too busy giving myself an RSI playing Zendoku to talk. (I’ve never been a Sodoku fanatic, but I’ve been playing this for two solid days and still haven’t managed to beat what I think is the final level with any of my characters.) I must go.

    Fall Television
OH MY GOSH… I just found out about Nashville… no, not the city I left my heart in — I’m talking about the new docu-drama by the makers of Laguna Beach. Ridiculous. And AWESOME! We’re so downloadinglthat getting someone to tape that for us.

  12. To Pass the Time
I’m feeling a bit better, thanks. Hans isn’t.

Someone asked how I know the difference between a headache and a migraine. For me, I can have a headache, take some Advil and still function. If it’s a migraine, you’ll find me on the floor by the toilet or with my head under a pillow in the darkest room in the house. It’s like my senses are at war with each other. Yesterday, I couldn’t be in the living room because it was too bright and the smell from the roast in the crockpot (normally a smell I loooove) was making me nauseous. However, in the bedroom, the sounds from the road were like jackhammers. Thankfully, a couple of pandadol with codeine knocked me out, and I slept for a couple hours.

    The Fountain
We had some movies due today, so we walked to the video store up the street. We got out The Fountain and just finished watching it. I’m not sure how I feel about the film as a whole, but that bathroom scene? HOT.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOCUzLA7BGU]

The score is great as well. (Listen here.)

In other movie news, my very own copy of The Music Man is on our coffee table. (No thanks to EZYdvd.) We ended up ordering it from the local video store, and it came in less than a week. It seemed easier than trying to explain to my mother where my old copy might be in the mountain of boxes living in my old bedroom.

    Belated Fourth
Happy fourth of July! We had a picnic. Tons of sparklers. Plenty of food. Some pretty clever decorations, thank you very much! And we didn’t even blow ourselves up, no thanks to Hans’s father who attempted to spray silly string directly into the fire. Ugh.

  13. Chuck a Sickie
This morning Hans wasn’t feeling very well, so we both opted to stay home. And it’s just as well, because a migraine kicked my butt this afternoon.

When I get them, I always try to figure out what the trigger(s) might have been. This is the reason I won’t ever eat dried fruit if I can help it.

All I know is that last night in the middle of the night I woke up dying of thirst. I hate getting out of bed when I just want to be in it sleeping, but I finally couldn’t take it and got up to drink the rest of the water in the Brita.

This morning I didn’t want to drink my coffee, because I was still quite thirsty and thought I should have water instead.

Those were the only two out-of-the-ordinary happenings, but then after looking online, apparently dehydration causes migraines in some people… as does a lack of caffeine if one is accustomed to certain amounts. Ding ding. Coupled with the red wine and nitrate-rich hot dogs from last night, I probably did this to myself.

But then I read that a decline in barometric pressure can cause migraines in some people. All the paper says the crazy wind here today is due to a low pressure system, but yeah… I really have no idea what that all means.

    I Want My MTV
I can’t figure out if this is going to be on the television there or not, but an American guy we met here was just in Romania working on a movie, and apparently the intern house got filmed for some sort of MTV reality show thing. (clip here, Jason’s the guy) Anyway, he’s a nice person, so if you happen to see it there, just be his fan.

    Jealous Much
Tash is going to America… again. But this time there will be no roadtrip from Indy to Nashville listening to beautiful Bic Runga. *hugs* Ahh, memories.

  15. Ooo Baby Baby, It’s a Wild World
I had wanted to sleep at least until the alarm went off this morning, but I woke up to the sound of a new bird. It was so close. I had to know what it looked like.

Hans and I ventured out on to the veranda, and in the trees out front there were at least four giant black birds singing loudly. I consulted my handy new Wildlife of Greater Brisbane book and determined that it is the pied currawong. (Hear its call.)

Then this afternoon, we noticed that one of the palm trees in the back yard is the new roost for three grey-headed flying foxes. IN THE BACKYARD. I’ve been around bat colonies and (#1) they have bats… lots and lots of bats… and (#2) they smell REAL BAD. So if I see more than those three hanging around, I’m going to take matters into my own hands… (I talk so big.)

    More Than Meets the Eye

    • If you lived in Australia, you could have seen Transformers by now.
    • I’ve already gloated to my brother.
    • He and I used to watch the cartoon after school.
    • Which is why I bought the DVDs five years ago.
    • The movie was pretty much awesome, even from the front row. *sigh*
    • The Shia LaBeouf/John Cusack comment is so right-on!
    • I realized that I had combined Transformers and M.A.S.K. (intro) into one giant MASKformers memory. I’m straight now.
