  1. Three Years and Counting…

It’s so hard to believe we were married three years ago. In some ways, it feels like it has been forever, and in other ways, it feels like just yesterday. I think we’re just lucky that we remembered our anniversary at all. I guess neither of us are super-sentimental in that regard.

He slipped an orange gerbera onto my desk when I wasn’t looking this morning. And we’re going for a little tapas lunch at Simpatico today. Then on Friday we head to our little getaway for a long weekend. We’re staying at Glass on Glasshouse. It looks absolutely perfect and peaceful. I’ll let you know!

  2. My Mexican Valentine

I’m not really one to need a big Valentine’s to-do. But we’ve been throwing around the idea of hitting our favourite (and, in my book, the ONLY proper…) Mexican Restaurant in Brisbane for Valentine’s Day.

Then today, I came across this recipe for Mexican Chocolate Pots de Crème, and I think we have ourselves a Valentine’s dessert. MMMM!

  3. Bragging Rights

Rave’s got a very complimentary review of my bearded soul man’s show a couple weeks ago. And they are also right about ME being incredible. Can’t wait to see them again!

  4. This is Your Birthday Song / It isn’t Very Long

Hubby is the magic number today. We woke up and opened presents in bed. Then we raced to get ready so we could play Little Big Planet before work. (He has rehearsal tonight. I don’t. Hehe!)

  5. A Conversation

After getting Tennis 101 the other night while watching the Williams sisters

Me: How is it that you know all this anyway?
    Him: Because I love tennis.
Me: Yeah, why is that again?
Him: Because there’s so much strategy involved. It’s like chess.
Me: Ah yes, the OTHER great spectator sport.

  6. And We’re Done

I have to say that the launch was so much fun and so unbelievable. People came! You know how you plan something big, and then you start to wonder if anybody will even show up? Well, over 250 people did. It was so wonderful.

I didn’t even take my camera along. Knowing I would be running around the whole day, I didn’t want to have to worry about lugging it with me. (That, and it’s not on our insurance yet… oops.) Plus I knew there would be way-more-competent photographers there. *ahem*McGaws*ahem* So I haven’t seen any shots yet, but he looked pretty hot if I do say so myself. (Although, I think the girl who was bummed to find out that he was married would agree.)

And then it worked out that a friend was able to come and shoot the set on a Red, which should make for some really great footage. I can’t wait to see that either.

So we’re just floating in a haze of post-show afterglow. It’s nice.

  7. We Are All Made of Stars

Allow me to brag for just one moment. My hunky man has a little article right here. (Also, he got a really good haircut last week, and it’s like he’s my hot new boyfriend or something. *rawr* Is that weird?)

And also in the Proud Wives Club this week is Brandy, and rightfully so. Waltz for Venus had one of their songs featured on MTV’s Real World. Check it here. (And with the number of RW marathons they have, that will be a sweet little royalty check, I would presume.)

  8. We’re Cute!

A couple weeks ago, we met a friend of a friend. It just so happens that we ride the same bus as her. The first thing she said was, “Oh, you’re that cute couple who rides my bus.”

Yesterday at the markets, the Yugoslavian woman who sells eggs could not stop gushing about how happy we look and how nice we look together. We practically had to give her our life stories with all her questions about how long we’ve known each other and how long we’ve been married. It was really sweet.

I’ve always hoped that we would be a cute OLD couple. You know, the little oldies who still hold hands and are just so cute you want to squeeze ’em? So I’m happy.

  9. Spaced Out

Last Monday we were both home sick. I happened to discover the news article about Phoenix landing on Mars. I don’t know why I care about that stuff, because I tend to think that money could be better spent trying to save life on THIS planet instead of trying to find life on others. But yeah, there is still a sense of mystery and adventure that consumes me. Witness:

I only have this picture because the person who is supposed to love me most in the world thought I looked hilarious and wanted to show me. That’s our marriage in a nutshell.

And yes, I’m wearing a scarf and sweater. And yes, that is my stocking cap on the couch next to me. What can I say? It’s cold in our house in the morning.

  10. A Late Celebration

Our second anniversary was on Tuesday. Hubby was sick. I was a little bit too. We even debated not going in to work but did anyway. We did go to the French restaurant near our work, but honestly, the best part was the dessert. I wouldn’t go back for any of the mains.

So we had intended to truly celebrate on the weekend. We have a little wine box where we kept the wine that we got from the hotel on our wedding night. We saved it for our first anniversary since we didn’t have the traditional top tier of freezer-burned wedding cake to eat. Then we replaced it with a new bottle to have on our second anniversary, and so, I’m sure, the tradition will continue.

I thought we needed a bit of a fancy meal to go with it, and I saw this recipe for Truffle and Cognac Macaroni and Cheese on Serious Eats this week. I knew we would have to try it.

First off, I may be Dutch by decent and therefore cheap in general, but I am not one to skimp on my ingredients. (I keep hearing about the joys of bargain shopping at Aldi’s, but I really just want the food I’m familiar with and like.) But anyway, this was probably the most expensive meal I’ve ever made based on the price of the ingredients from the truffles to the cheeses to the cognac.  It ended up tasting incredible… but it was soooo rich. Definitely not your every-day mac’n’cheese!

  12. What ARE Husbands for Then?

    Quote of the day…
“Why didn’t you tell me that I spent the day with hair that made me look like a long-lost member of Def Leppard?”

  13. Food for Thought (& Food)

I came back to my desk after lunch and found a present on my chair from my very sweet, very naughty husband. It is a sort of book/cookbook called Maggie’s Harvest by Maggie Beer. I had been admiring it a few weeks ago, because the book itself is just beautiful. The fabric cover, the teal and orange embroidery, the overall girth, the heirloom potential… it was so ME. (Make sure you look at this review with its gorgeous photos of the book.)

One look at the price tag, however, and I had exactly one hundred and twenty-five reasons not to need it anymore. (The cover will just get dirty in a kitchen… who has room for a 736-page book these days… etc.)

But now it’s mine, and I can’t wait to spend all day tomorrow out on the Adirondack thumbing through it with my baby chicken chirping at me. I’m excited, because she is an Australian cook, even though Australian food isn’t SO different from American food (despite the obvious kangaroo meat, general blandness, and bacon on everything). I’m interested on her take on food, because she writes about the ingredients and the recipes instead of just rattling off recipes.

I don’t know. I’m into food these days. I even got an “ooo-la-la” in response to my white truffle popcorn we had for the Project Runway Finale Party.

** Look for Adirondack chairs and other outdoor furniture at Amazon.

  14. Stuff and Things

♥ My Adirondack chairs from the porch came on Monday. I put them together on Wednesday. And tomorrow I’m going to spend the entire day sitting on the veranda. LOVE THEM!

♥ Hubby had his album mastered last week, and I feel one step closer to that enormous exhale of relief once it’s finally OUT. It sounds great. Someone at the office said, “It sounds like a real album, you know?” Yes. That’s the point. 🙂

♥ We’re still battling the flea thing at our house. That Darn CAT! I’m not keen on bombing the whole place with pesticides, but I’m getting close to doing so. I have ordered a product from the UK that is pesticide-free that hopefully will solve my problems — if it ever gets here. It’s called Skoosh. I mean, really. How can it not be awesome?

♥ We got a Christmas card on Monday that was posted November 27th from Virginia Beach. I think it swam here.

♥ I can’t wait to get home to see if my old Saso cd made it along to this country. I’ve got a hankerin’ for a Big Group Hug.

♥ Looks like we might be doing a little get-away on the Easter 4-day weekend. Though it won’t likely involve seeing all the Nashvillians who will be around. (I canNOT believe I’m passing up the chance to see Geoff Moore. Due to becoming friends with his old merchandise manager, I have been to more of his shows than I can count. Oh well.)

** Check out the Geoff Moore store at Amazon.

  15. It’s My Turn

Since I lived the greater portion of my life without a valentine, dang-it, I am milking it for all it’s worth now! I am so excited about the little gift I ordered for Hubby today. I know the 14th is tomorrow, but we’re celebrating in March. He got tickets for Phantom the last week of March, so hopefully his gift will be here by then.

  16. Non-Universal Marketing

Setting the stage: We stopped at a shop on the way in to work to get some juice. There was a display of Limited Edition Big Red gum by the cash register. (Australians don’t really do “cinnamon” so much.)

Me: So kiss a little longer
    Hold tight a little longer
    Stay close a little longer
    Longer with Big Red

    Sing with me now!

That Big Red freshness lasts right through it
Your fresh breath goes on and on
    While you chew it

    Come on!

    Say goodbye a little longer
Make it last a little longer
Give your breath long lasting freshness with BIG RED!

Don’t you know the Big Red song?

Him: I thought the answer was pretty obvious when I didn’t join in.

Me: Weird. I thought everyone knew the Big Red song.

  17. A Thought

I love the way my wedding ring catches the light as I type on days when I’ve scrubbed it in the morning. I should really remember to do that more often.

  18. And a Pinch to Grow an Inch

I was okay with “30”, but “31” sounds so old.

Yesterday was lovely. Perfect weather. Wonderful husband to wait on me. Spoke to the fam having their Christmas Eve celebration. Got to catch up with Tash. Texts and emails from all over the globe — our friend is somewhere between Paris & London on holiday and bothered to send a message. Had our champers with wild hibiscus flowers. Played Call of Duty 4 with Dan & Lis all evening. Good day! I am very spoiled.

    Succumbing to Commercialism
I know Christmas is absolutely not all about the presents… but… my favourites were a gift certificate to get a couple of our wedding photos (particularly this one and this one) printed on canvas. Yeah, that brought me to tears. And then for my birthday I got a mirror for my hallway, some flower pots and the Time Team Dvds.

    What did you get?

  19. In the Papers

Brisbane commuters ought to pick up the MX paper this afternoon. Might see a familiar face in there today — well, one that’s familiar to me anyway. 🙂 Or come see him in person tomorrow night at Ric’s.

  20. A Conversation

We saw a boy on the train with two red strings tied around his wrist. Due to his ethnicity, I asked Hans if he knew if they had special meaning.

Him: They are what we like to call “friendship bracelets”.
I give him the “that’s crazy talk” look.
Him: That’s apparently not the answer you were looking for.
Me: Listen, I KNOW friendship bracelets. I made like an infinity of them in grade school.

This is more along the lines of what I wanted to know.

** For some more grown-up friendship bracelets, check these out at Amazon: Sterling Silver Red Beaded Friendship Bracelet, Sterling Silver Double Friendship Knot Cuff Bangle, ‘Bless This Woman’ Sterling Silver Cuff Bracelet.

  21. Pride: In the Name of Love

My main man is on the front page of Triple J Unearthed at the moment. (Triple J is one of the national radio stations, and Unearthed is for mostly undiscovered bands.) So yeah, he works really hard at what he does. And though on rare occasions I feel like music/graphics widow, I really am proud of him and think he deserves the recognition.
